South of Loutraki and on the east side of the Peloponnese, Nafplio is a historic, former capital of modern Greece and a place worth visiting. Nafplio, considered one of Greece’s most romantic places to visit, is famous for its old town with its maze of narrow streets, hidden squares and stunning neoclassical mansions. The old city has Venetian architecture and it is offered for a visit year-round.
Nafplio is near Epidaurus and Mycenae and worth squeezing it into your itinerary. At the seafront, facing the medieval fortress Bourtzi, you can enjoy a coffee or a meal. Nafplio is full of fortresses and castles.
The Palamidi castle standing dominant above the city for hundreds of years.
You will be rewarded with the views, once you’ve mastered climbing the 999 steps, all the way to the top of the Palamidi castle. On the way down, treat yourself to an ice-cream at our favourite Antica Gelateria di Roma, while enjoying a stroll in the alleys of the old city.
Worth visiting the Komboloi Museum, showcasing the link of the beads to the traditions of Greece over the years.
